The Ultimate Transformer

Quite often at our house this little “almost” five year old boy pays a visit to spend the day with Grandma and Grandpa. He is so much like his mother and father and talks non-stop, except when he is taking a nap. Lately, the topic of his conversations is all about transformers. Seeing transformers. Watching transformers. And, Grandma, can you make me a Bumblebee Transformer costume for Halloween? When is Halloween? We better get started.” It’s a good thing “Google” exists in the world so that grandparents can keep up on all the latest “in” things that their grandkids are obsessed with. So, while I do know about transformers a bit, I decided to dig a bit deeper and see what it was really all about. Transformers were first invented by a Japanese toy company,...

The Way

There are many reasons why people read. For some, it is a way to escape the stress of the day and travel to another time and place. For others it is a way to enlighten and educate their mind. Either way, reading transports us into a new experience. I love it when I find a favorite book that I have read has been made into a movie. But it is also a joy to discover a movie, fall in love with it, and then get to enjoy the book it was made from. During my recent surgery recovery I had an opportunity to watch a movie entitled The Way. To be honest it was the fact that Martin Sheen was in this movie that encouraged me to download it. I really was not sure what to expect, but this movie has been one that comes to my mind almost every day since I watched it three weeks...

Top 10 Unique Travel Destinations of the World

I have been blessed to have traveled and experienced some very unique destinations all over the world as well as right in my own backyard. Here are a few of my favorites. Maybe they will soon be yours as well. 1. Sri Lanka: Whether you recognize it as Sri Lanka, Ceylon or its ancient Arab name of Serendib (serendipity), this tiny island nation casts a primitive and mysterious spell on its visitors. Roughly the size of New Jersey, Sri Lanka is a mini India. Terraced hillside farm land, beautiful pink coral beaches and hidden jungle shrines and temples make this tiny nation one of my favorite unique international destinations. I traveled to Sri Lanka in 1983 with World Vision International. Since the mission and purpose of our trip was to get deep into remote...

Our Five Senses: Wind Chimes and Bare Feet

It is late at night on a cool summer evening. I am lying in my bed with an icepack on my shoulder from a recent surgery. I have the window wide open. The evening breeze is softly billowing through the white lace curtain. As I lay here, outside I hear the breeze playing in the treetops. I also hear the sound of the wind chime on my back patio. I am immediately transported to another time and another place, when I remember a similar sound. The wind chimes sound exactly like the sound of clanging cowbells hanging from the necks of the dairy cows grazing peacefully in the meadows on the slopes of the Alps. Flashback to 2008. I am traveling in Germany and Austria with my mother, my daughter, and my niece. We are in Reutte (Austria) staying at the Landgasthof Lilie. We...
