You remember it. The dreaded slumber party game. The one that sent everyone in a nervous uncomfortable frenzy. And quite honestly, the game that made me feign excuses to not attend with my friends.
TRUTH or DARE!
If you picked DARE, it might be some really bizarre action that would be so embarrassing to accomplish, like prank calling the school principal. But even though the unknown of DARE was scary, most of us picked it over the more horrible option of TRUTH. The TRUTH option would put us in the position of having to open up and share one of our deepest darkest secrets. As with any teenage girl there were just some things that we wanted to keep for only our closest friends. Which were you? Did you DARE to tell the TRUTH?
To DARE to do something is to put yourself in a position of losing control. You have to put your trust in the person or group that is daring you to do something that you have no choice over. With the slumber party game this could be a simple embarrassing action that usually centered on boys. Fairly innocent fun most of the time. But as adults, do we still play the TRUTH or DARE game. Not for silly things like prank calls, but with more serious life issues.
The dictionary defines DARE as having the courage to attempt something challenging. Most of us would not even DARE to consider participating in potentially life-threatening activities like walking over the grand canyon on a tightrope. But I think what challenges us on a day-to-day basis is deeper.
Do we DARE to open ourselves up to those around us? Do we DARE to share our lives with people on an intimate level? Do we DARE to accept by faith something more for our lives? Do we DARE to live differently, to shun the path of the world and instead choose to walk a different direction? It really is our choice. TRUTH or DARE? I DARE you to live in TRUTH! The choice is yours.

It is so hard to dare to be vulnerable. I am (slowly) learning the amazing benefits and deep relationships that come from opening up, but it is still not first-nature! Thank you for this reminder!

Thanks for the comment Annie. I think daring to be vulnerable goes against our human nature which is why I feel it can only truly happen through the Holy Spirit. Blessings to you.
